What Is the North Node In Astrology?

The North node can be considered the calling of the soul, and although we may sometimes dislike the concept of destiny or fate, we cannot deny that there are examples of purpose on earth.

02

What Is The Concept Of The Soul?

The meaning of the soul and how we interpret the concept of the soul is that it creates an intention within our human experience. It is easily seen throughout nature. Everything that lives operates in the function of its own rules, its signature, which in turn, operates in a larger pattern of synchronicity. Knowing that it is bound by intention, specifically to create and co-create, and as human beings we innately understand that we have a connection to nature on earth.

When we extend this thought process to the cosmos, it creates an insight that expands on the concept of intention of the larger spaces that are beyond us instead of around us and with us. Asking us to question whether the cosmos has just as much of an impact on us as we do on the earth, and if so to what extent is regarded as destiny, fate or intention? In the book Astrology of Fate by Liz Greene, she writes of the Ancient Greek Poet Hesiod, who believed nature is anything but careless of right and wrong. Meaning that nature does not consider the concept of good or bad as we know it, it is only being. The natural rules in which we live by and what Liz Green refers to as, fate, is the Guardian of (natural) justice and law rather than life being the random predetermined force that dictates a man’s every action. This guardian has set the boundaries of order within which man must live, because man is part of nature. Leading us to understand that fate, intention and creation are all of nature.

The Theory Behind The Nodes

To understand the concept of the North node and South node, and any part of our birth chart, we have to consider that everything in life is continuously developing itself in relationships of polarity, opposites, combination and self awareness. This is the presence of with and without, give and take, shadow and light, highlighting the importance of balance and the effort needed to maintain balance while using what we have learnt out of maintaining balance to then drive us forward.

We can then look at the relationship of balance between the North node and the South node.  Where the South node is what we can consider as part of our conditioning, what we have always known, before we even knew ourselves. The North node is where the soul wants to take us in this life, what we must discover, showing how we can discover and our ability to discover.

The Nodes And The Moon

The nodes refer to the nodes of the moon and their planetary rulers create an awareness to the pull to our unconscious desire, a psycho spiritual awareness to our own potential. The association to the Moon indicates an emphasis on the soul’s journey, first through our emotions. It also creates a connection with the things that we cannot see, as our emotions are what we can feel. We only see them when they are expressed and only know the strength of them when we see the response or reaction.

When we consider emotions in this way, we can relate our emotions to motion itself. Emotion, is expression, is motion. Another way to put it is that our emotion has the ability to manifest and they will. When we wake up in the morning and we feel a certain way, our emotions will lead us into what is going to happen. Sometimes giving us an insight into foreseeing happenings in the day, next week, next month, next year, just from the one feeling in that moment, we then choose our direction by using focus. We continuously see what we have produced from the way we feel about it.

As the nodes are connected to the moon, they really help us to understand how important emotional expression is. The nodes placements in our birth chart therefore, shows the emotionally interpreted of our natal moon placement. From the moon placement we can see the expressions that make us the client and therapist to our own emotions. Sometimes we do not understand why we feel certain emotions, yet we know we have to go through a process of analysing them and our moon is our processor.

For example, A person with a South Node Aquarius and North Node Leo, will be on the journey to truly recognise how to move away from the feeling of being part of the group (Aquarius) into the feeling of leadership, emotionally creating their own pedestal (Leo). Depending on their moon placement, there are different ways this journey will be emotionally felt and expressed.

With Earth moons, there will be an emphasis on practically, using a process of planning, methods of consistency and an emphasis on growth. Water moons, there will be a focus on emotional expression that expands further into emotional sensitivity, contemplation, intuitiveness and creativity. Fire moons will focus on the outward expression, reaction, motivation that is the catalyst for action, creativity and drive. Air moons will focus on logic, and the process of thought, finding solutions in mentally stimulating processes.

As the moon is the emotional analyser and processor, it then shows how we can create steps towards what the north node wants for us. The North node will not allow us to stay in one motion, there is a need to continuously explore from the moon’s emotion, what we have to remember is that emotion is expressive motion, and every motion has intention.

What is the North Node in Astrology?

So now we know the North node shows us our unconscious psyche, and the evolution of our souls development, we can explore our chart. The relation the north nodes to the other planetary placements will broaden the understanding of the North Node journey and desire. For example, If a person was born with a Sun in Leo at 22 degrees and their North node at Leo 22 degrees, it would indicate that they have come into this life to be stand in their own power, gaining more as they move through life. However, if their South node was 23 degrees Leo next to their Sun, they would instead would how to understand that the power of intention is to use their power an opposite way, and used in the dynamic of projection, reflection and utilising their power in Aquarian ways, such as with society or technology.

How important is North Node?

The North node is almost like a cycle of tapping into how we could feel in 10 years time. The soul has a calling and knows the only way we will pay attention is through our emotions, the internal place for each individual. We hear this concept alot in personal development where we get the opportunity to recognise we must be who we want to grow into, now. Step into that person now and do what they would do so you can grow into the way it feels. We know it is not an overnight process, it is slow and untwining of all the emotions that we have known, all the emotional associations, of the conditioning and to then teach ourselves a different language while speaking that new language.

So regardless of the things that come within our conditioning, such societal standards, family, institutional, and emotional dependencies. All of those things have a part to play with the North node because they are part of the foundation of which new beliefs will grow, develop and evolve. We do not just become who we are overnight, just like a tree was once a sapling with roots formed in soil that was there before it existed, our unconscious conditioning develops to become conscious knowing, driven by a need to grow.

How To identify Your Own North Node (and Your South Node, too!)

We have belief systems to help us understand what we go through in life, and with the North node journey some of those beliefs are entwined with what that journey has to discover.

This is not to say that the North node journey is easy as the North node presents experiences in our life that have a relationship with the way we feel. In order to make changes with a difference, we have to feel it. If it feels painful we pay attention to it, making us question how it can be solved so we can get past the pain. If it feels joyful, we want to stay in the feeling and question how we can have more experiences like that one. How we interact with the feelings help us to stand within our beliefs or help create new beliefs.

As a child, we could not envision adulthood but we had expectations based on our beliefs about life. We soon find out that expectation and reality are very different. As adulthood may be completely different to what our child self thought of us. When we look back (South Node), we can recognise whether we had positive or negative associations, regardless those associations are intended to shape the way our North node wants us to explore and express our deepest desires, helping us to go through what is ultimately our individual journey through life.

08

What Are The Axis Of The Nodes?

The axis of the nodes indicates there is a dynamic of polarities, combination, projection and reflection. An intertwining of the accessible energies that have an experience we each other in order to carry out the intention of the North node. The South node has an intention to register what we have experienced, highlight the things we already know how to feel, be aware of the emotions that we are established with comfortability and driven us beyond that feeling. These new feelings of interaction create the tension between what we know what we do not know, the pivoting point of uncomfortable, driving us to the emotionally unknown place which is the North node.
